Testing Tight Threads (Presencia, Daruma)

I don’t often use such thick threads like these and usually I buy them for stitching branches and tree trunks.

I tested three types of threads:

1. Presencia Finca PERLE Cotton №16 #4396 (DMC Embroidery needle #10)

2. Daruma Home Thread #30 - Kimidori #24 (DMC Embroidery needle #10)

3. Daruma Sashiko Thread Medium Weight - 30m - #227 Asparagus (DMC Embroidery needle #1)

The first step:

I just made a long stitch with each thread so that you can see how they look on the fabric.

The second step:

I made V-shape branches with couching stitches using Presencia thread, and Daruma #24. For Daruma #227, you can see in the corresponding photo how I separated the tip of the thread into fine threads and secured each one of them in the form of the tree branches. As a result, it looks like a small tree.

Each thread is secured with Sulky (separated thread):

The third step:

For Presencia and Daruma #24, I made trailing stitches (single thread) wrapping the bottom of the branches with the same threads. For 3 (Daruma #227), see description in the photo.

The fourth step:

For Presencia and Daruma #24, I made trailing stitches with separated Sulky thread for V-shape branches. For Daruma #227, see description in the photo.

The fifth step:

For Presencia and Daruma #24, I showed examples of French knots, satin stitches, and chain stitches.

So, you can judge for yourself how thick they are by looking at this photo with a ruler:

Speaking about the texture of Daruma threads – it’s very soft and thick at the same time, I have always been excited with Japanese threads!

I would recommend using these threads for stitching closer objects, such as branches and thin tree trunks. These threads are not suitable for stitching distant objects if your embroidered landscapes are not large. Before you start stitching, consider the thread thickness. For example, using Daruma #227 for a trunk you will need to use double threads for the foliage.

I would also use such types of threads as Presencia and Daruma #24 for some details for architectural elements, but for closer objects only. As for Daruma #227, I think it’s possible too, but it strongly depends on what type of architectural element it will be.
